 “No Time for Economy”

The overwhelming attention on the economy of the United States and the impact it will have on every American has placed a new level of focus on the negotiation process in every one of our local jurisdictions here in New Jersey.

Threats and intimidation that were a part of bargaining in some places in the past have become common place.  Budget shortfalls and revenue losses have made the process more contentious than ever.  Like never before local FMBA negotiating teams and officers must be prepared for just about anything.

Local FMBA representatives must be our brightest and most informed members who have the commitment and knowledge to counter a very difficult negotiating environment.  The areas of our collective bargaining agreements we once thought to be sacred and safe are now under attack.  Public relation campaigns are being and have been launched to paint firefighters salaries and benefits as unaffordable.

Millions and millions of dollars are at stake in local negotiations.  To send ill-equipped or under prepared union officials into council chambers or administrators offices is unacceptable and irresponsible.  The FMBA is a serious organization that handles the most serious of issues.  From protection under the law, to protection on the fireground to protection of salaries and benefits, the FMBA manages the present and future benefit and retirement packages of our membership.   Lives and lifestyles literally hang in the balance.

Relying blindly on someone else, be it State officers or local officers, will place all of us in a very tenuous position.   Placing the best trained and informed, and most diplomatic members in position to make a difference is the only clear alternative.  For those who choose to be involved in activities other than union advocacy must support and compensate professional individuals to maintain and deliver the best possible outcomes at the bargaining table.

The FMBA is a labor union first and foremost and is charged with the advancement and protection of career firefighters.  The FMBA is a fraternal benevolent association as well and continues to advocate for the less fortunate and aid our brothers and sisters in the times of greatest need.  Let us never confuse our mission as a benevolent association with a casual, loosely-knit band of brothers who cavalierly convene when they feel the need.

In these times especially we must continue to be a 24/7, 365 day a year, vigilant, informed and well funded force to be reckoned with, represented by the highest common denominator.

Intense times deserve intense involvement by intense individuals.  Nothing less will protect all we have won in past negotiations.   Make it your commitment to serve or support vigorously those you have chosen to support you.
