North Hudson firefighters continue to battle 8-alarm fire in Union City

The North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue had to get help from other towns as it battled an 8-alarm fire earlier this morning.

Local firefighters responded to the call which was first reported at around 9 P.M. yesterday. By 4 A.M this morning, the blaze had turned into an 8-alarm fire, which necessitated help from Bayonne, Harrison, Kearny, Jersey City, and other town departments.

During the course of the night, the fire had burned through 6 buildings on Bergenline Avenue between 21st and 22nd streets. Flames were also said to have burned through at least one of the roofs; and by early this morning, several more were reported to have collapsed. Firefighters responded by setting up collapse zones within the area.

Reports also indicate that 13 individuals were hurt with minor injuries, including firefighters. One person remains missing and is unaccounted for.

Emergency evacuations were made shortly after the blaze had reached its third alarm. Displaced residents are being put up at Jose Marti School where the Red Cross being staged.

The fire was reported as under control as of 8:14 A.M. today. Currently, Bergenline Avenue between 19th and 24th streets remains closed to traffic.
